Medicinal Mushroom Series: Zhuling (Polyporus umbellatus)

We have reached the final mushroom on our list of super fungi. The last mushroom on my alphabetized list is none other than the Zhuling or Polyporus umbellatus mushroom.

A rare mushroom, Polyporus umbellatus can be found throughout North America in the spring and fall growing at the base of various hardwood trees. It is an edible mushroom, with an apparently pleasant taste. More importantly however, are the benefits it has to offer you as a supplement. Here are the top 3 benefits of the Zhuling mushroom! 1) Improves Treatment of Hepatitis B

Clinical studies have shown that supplementing with the Zhuling mushroom can improve the outcome and treatment of Hepatitis B, an inflammatory disease of the liver. Left untreated, Hepatitis B can lead to further complications such as cirrhosis, cancer and even liver failure. Any and all help counts!

2) Renal Protective

In addition to protecting the liver, this mushroom has proven its use in protecting the kidneys as well. Studies are now emerging where it has been used to help in the treatment of renal interstitial fibrosis. Left untreated, this disease can cause a lot of problems for the kidneys and the overall health of the affected individual. Once again, anything that improves outcomes here is more than welcome.

3) Inhibits tumour proliferation and induces apoptosis in breast cancer

Yes, this is very specific, however the implications here are very important. Supplementing with the Zhuling mushroom for those who have breast cancer can literally be a life saver. This mushroom not only stops tumours from growing (which is a fantastic benefit in of itself) but it also leads to their self destruction. Not many supplements or medications can say that. Any and everyone with breast cancer should at least know this mushroom exists!
